White Summer Reunion
70WHITE SUMMER's reunion June '09
"White Summer is the best band I ever heard in a bar" -Eric Clapton
- White Summer the rock music band
White Summer is a rock band from Michigan founded in 1973 renowned for its original music albums and classic rock concerts.
Czar's in St. Joseph, MI
- Czar\'s 505 - National Club Entertainment in St. Joseph Michigan
Amazing what you can experience by walking into a tiny door off the street! Tom Jennings, the owner, apparently has a few quite successful restaurants in the lovely town of St. Joseph. I'd write a hub about the town but invited James to instead...
James' son ADAM
The energy of a crowd before a band plays is electric. You can almost hear questions running through their heads: “Will it be a good time? Do they know their stuff? Will it move me...?” However, this group was different. Young and old alike had gathered, flying from hundreds of miles away, driving more than 1,000 miles, with even the “locals” going 70+ miles to get there. They would not have missed THIS for anything in the world!
They’d walked into Czar's completely doubt free, truckloads of anticipation beaming from them as if fireworks were already exploding in their brains. This crowd expected pure MAGIC!
“Just wait ‘till you hear Jimmy rip that guitar – JUST WAIT!” Himey, the brother of the bass player, Randy Brown, kept repeating. “You’re not going to believe it! Just wait…”
White Summer’s website has testimonies of how great they were even from Eric Clapton and Neil Young, but James A Watkins, the musician admitted to not having played since June of 2007. Was I the only one who wondered if this might be less than a stellar performance?
His son Adam had brought the drums and was busily setting them up but seemed nervous. Why was he nervous? Enlightening me he said, “I’ll be playing later”. Was that going to be after the band played their sets or was James going to make an “obligatory” appearance resigning early since he had not practiced in so long?

“Hi, I’m Scott Owen”, volunteered a handsome young fellow. “I’m a friend of James and sung in the band when I was 13 years old.” Quite the testimony for how generous White Summer’s members were but was he singing with them tonight? I am sure it still sounded good in the shower I mused. Hey, he was easy on the eyes – I could handle it.
“I remember when I was 17”, Himey chimed in again, “Randy took Jimmy on a single tour of our house, and from then on he knew it better than I did as if he wasn’t blind at all!” I had noticed that earlier about Jimmy Schrader. Tempted to tell him what was on his plate at the restaurant as Kelly McGillis had done for Val Kilmer in “At First Sight”, James beat me to it mentioning a sauce that was hanging threateningly close to disaster. Jimmy calmly alleviated all concern with an easy “I noticed that”. I realized then that Jimmy could probably rattle off at least a couple hundred things going on in the diner completely oblivious to me or anyone else. On his bio for his current band (www.badmannerz.com ) in Florida, it mentions his love for bungee jumping. James’ admiration shone as he told tales of how Jimmy has even flown a Cessna 180, driven a boat and a car at over 100 miles an hour! Clearly, this man does not believe in ANY limitations!
Connected like no others - and a JOY to be with!
James and Jimmy seemed connected in a way I had never felt or witnessed with anyone before. “Jimmy creates his own music and when he would play me a new melody he had created for the first time, words and melodies would come right into my head as if they were being sung,” remembered James. James also used to have songs “appear” to him in his mind fully formed with all instrumentation, vocals, lyrics; while doing something else. James added how creative a player Jimmy is, humbly leaving out his own dynamic and highly empathic talents.
“Jimmy has amazing, supernatural hearing. You can rattle two pots together and he would know it was “B flat”. One time in Florida while my cousin was visiting, the crickets chirped through the open screen windows. My cousin asked what notes they were. Without hesitation, Jimmy recognized and answered that most were in B, with a few of them in D – and he was not kidding! A band member would cut the cheese and Jim would say “C sharp” they reminisced laughingly. “I wanted to be in Jimmy's world on stage, where it is nothing but sound, so I started to close my eyes while we played and soon we could communicate completely just by varying the intensity of a note and the other flowing right along with it.” Now that is connected! Just being in the presence of these two exceptional individuals enveloped me with a feeling that all was right with the world.
Randy and Jimmy in Czars
Randy led Jimmy on stage to set-up and despite Jimmy’s calm, contented demeanor, you could feel his delight and enthusiasm the minute he stood in ‘his space’. He was more than ready to shine the minute someone said so. You could tell that someone was going to be James. He was drifting around masterfully; making sure every detail was in place without any of the usual business mode or worry the rest of us exude when “on purpose”. Fans were magnetized to him like moths to a flame, many of whom were women – much to his wife’s chagrin. It must be hard to try to maintain ownership with someone who is clearly meant to “participate fully in the world through the full and positive articulation of their gifts”. (2/15/55 according to “The Secret Language of Destiny” by Gary Goldschneider & Joost Elffers) Individuals on the “Way of Expression” are encouraged to “Remember to focus on the positive with a reward of knowing the joy of bringing magic to others”.
Apparently, Randy’s wife kept moving him farther away, geographically, hoping he would quit that lifestyle altogether too. “We had a number of bass players through the years but Randy was the best” James shared earlier. “He played with us for almost 5 years until they lived too far for him to even make it to practice". Unlike James however, Randy’s “Way of Introspection” (6/4/57) requires him to “release the need for an audience” so his wife was doing him a favor. Despite having the strength to get “on the wagon” for a couple years, Randy kept coming over seemingly to get a contact high from his brother’s consumption level. “I won’t go out for anything less than $100 bucks a night” he exclaimed. His statement both confirmed how tough it must be to play with a ‘less than the best’ band and denying his current church band involvement. Jimmy’s destiny too requires him to “release the need to be popular” which may have contributed to living a quieter life than huge fame would have allowed. His “Way of Freedom’s” (3/26/53) lesson is “to be true to oneself by living an authentic life”. Happily married to a woman who supports him in being all he can be, Jimmy is indeed following his destiny and said he does not have a single regret – “not a one”.
There were many "back in the days"
Dale Parsons, their personal manager, must have been accustomed to warding off or distracting some fans himself. He too emanated so much warmth the Titanic could have been saved with one look. Sharp as a tack and heart that seemed to have the Midas touch, everyone automatically checked in with him to be “caught up” and informed. He used to bring structure to the band ‘back in the day’ and you could tell he contributed a whole lot more than just setting up the stage. (“The Way of Structure” 12/7/60). What an amazing team! My doubts were dissipating.
James - drummer, singer, songwriter
Wild things! They made our hearts sing!
All of a sudden, goose bumps started forming on my arms as White Summer started playing. Almost everyone immediately jumped up to dance and move.
THIS WAS GOING TO BE AMAZING!!!
Warming up with Robin Trower’s “Day of the Eagle” and flowing into Pink Floyd’s “Time”, I too was carried joyously to a world with no doubt what-so-ever.
I instantly realized why thousands of people have said “White Summer” is the best band they have ever heard!
James revealed, “The band’s philosophy had always been that we were musicians and if anyone was going to listen, we wanted them to listen for the music we played – for no other reason”.

Known as an inspiration to Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and other guitarists, Guy is considered an important exponent of Chicago blues. He is the father of female rapper Shawnna and son Michael. He is the older brother of late blues guitarist Phil Guy. Guy is known for his showmanship: for example, he plays his guitar with drumsticks, or strolls into the audience while jamming and trailing a long guitar chord.

It was a night for PROS all the way!
As you can see by what they played that night, everyone was filled to capacity with joyful memories. Music touches our soul and with musicians as accomplished as White Summer’s, it was an evening that will not be forgotten for decades.
Scott did get up to sing and I was absolutely astounded at how fabulous he was! Subsequently, I found out from James that, “Scott is one of my bestest and oldest friends. He has never sung in a band. He is a karaoke champion! That was the second time he ever sang a song with us.”
Even Dale got up to sing and he too was amazing! (I knew there was more to him than even the tremendous warmth he emanated J)
"Red House" by White Summer Band
Since the band is no longer together, you may ask why I write this hub. In simplified terms I believe what Bob Moawad once said, “If you’re too busy to help the people around you succeed, you’re TOO busy”. I recognized a kindred spirit in James who has helped many, especially Jimmy Schrader.
Naturally, he asks you to, “Go to YouTube, and listen to Red House (see sidebar and new hub). There are many great guitar players but you don’t hear many guys that can really rip the blues like that. There’s something about those blues licks – there’s something about that feeling…”
"What goes around comes around” is another reason. I believe James has much to contribute and perhaps needs that same support he has been dishing out for decades from those of us who are fans. He's thinking about revamping and then publishing a book about his life while in the band and rock and roll in that era. Hoping you'll join me in encouraging him to do just that.
In the meantime, anyone want to join me in Florida to listen to Jimmy Schrader play in Bad Mannerz? This time I can guarantee it will indeed be PURE MAGIC! (of course, we have to ask James to visit with us :) p-l-e-a-s-e James - play it again! )

SEM Pro— How can I thank you enough for coming to Michigan and taking the time to interview us, take photos, listen to the band and then: the work it took to put this together! For complete strangers! (Well, not anymore.) :D
I could not be more pleased. You are my new best friend. And, I have a feeling, a best friend to the world. I am going to send this link to my email friends. They will get a charge out of it. You are the best!
I see you took out my phat photo. :-) Thanks!
Do you mean the link to the Hub Page about my band?
I tried all the links you have on this page and they all work just fine. I didn't know you could have so many. Someone told me you are only allowed two on a Hub Page but obviously that's not true?
Well done, SEM Pro! Your description of the scene, the players and the music is so electric it makes me feel like I was there with you! Everything from the playlist (soooo many memories of the originals of these songs) to the photos to the obvious affection you have for the band and the bandmates have for each other, make this -- in my opinion -- the penultimate homage to the power of rock & roll.
James -- Thank you for sharing your band with us on HP, too. Any possibility of a West Coast appearance:-)?
SEM Pro -- Actually, you made MY decade! Seriously, reading this made me feel 10 years younger. Thanks for being a literary band groupie surrogate for me:-). MM
OH this is just totally awesome!!! hah!!
dori
almost? lol I will enjoy the music and write all my blues away!

A stranger from Greece put three songs from my first album on YouTube. A friend called to tell me about it. I turned 21 the day it was released so it's old stuff and our first effort and recording our own music but here are the links.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SamGVdqD2Uk
Yes, I want to do more music Hubs. I have a request to put our versions of "All Along the Watchtower" "Green River" and "Midnight Rider" on YouTube (and a Hub). Creating the videos is time consuming (maybe because I obviously don't know what I'm doing!).
I have plenty of original music I can use, too. But on the last one "Red House" was the big hit—as I thought it would be. We never could write songs as well as we could play them.
The reunion was filmed and Jimmy's sister Wendy is having it transferred to DVD. I can't wait to see it. A CD was recorded, also, that I heard one set of but it is one continuous track so Dale is having a friend split it into individual song tracks and then I'll have it.
Oh yes, I have 4 videos. I meant a limit of 2 Anchor Texts.
Mighty Mom— I would love to do West Coast. We always do them in Florida—because the three of us all live here and we played here for years after Orlando became our new home base in 1980—and in Michigan because that is where the three of us are from. We never played on the west coast so I don't know who would show up to see us! But if they would come out I think it is possible.
Memories, memories............memories!! I sure wish I could have been back in MI to see White Summer!! What a great time my friends and I have had over the years following around from bar to bar to see the band!! Thanks for this hub - - great job!! If you ever want to visit beautiful, sunny AZ..........bring the band and the gang along!!
Thanks for posting this. I was wondering who the fellow hubber was that James mentioned would be going to watch. Looks like a great time. Simply awesome hub, photos, and interviews! The play list was fabulous! You really make me wish I could have been there! :D
Cheryl! My old friend! One of our old band mates, Danny Misch (bass and vocals), is moving to Phoenix soon. So, you never know! I am glad you commented in here.
My son, Adam, is my relief drummer—as in relief pitcher. :D
Scott will appreciate you calling him a "young man" since he is 48!
If you or anybody else comes to Florida to hear Bad mannerz I will certainly join you. And they are a great band! They feature a terrific singer and a fine keyboard player who is expert on sax, flute and harp; bringing nice colorings to the set list.
Those that missed the hunreds of gigs in White Summers' Michigan days missed uncountable terrific and memorable times. To many of us, the mere mention of The Pine Keg or Chiefs, just to name a few places, brings back good times we won't forget. Much has changed over the years but the boys can still bring it when they get the chance. There were so many great fans back in those days we'd be surprised when any missed a show. One of the bands biggest fans was my late sister Kathy Jaggers, with whom I shared some of our best times together with Jim and the gang. Absolutely priceless times when the music was a bond that joined all of us. There's as big a chance of reliving that period as there is of explaining how close we all were then. Sort of a big ole family where everyone knew just what to expect from each other. A lot of love there and God bless 'em all.
Johnny's comments nearly brought me tears. He captured the essence that is ineffable to me.
I guess I need to get busy and get a few more songs on YouTube.
SEM Pro— I got them on there but if you are waiting for me to master any technology it might be a while. I have never been a gadget man.
Scott is a fine singer. That's for sure. A great friend, too. We really see each other and have a great friendship.
I guess that's why I liked the drums. Nice and simple. Grab a pair of clubs and start beating on them. I used to picture the faces of my ex's on my tom tom and hammer them all night long. Feels good. :-)
Oh, I was only kidding!!! It was just ONE of my exes and I would see her face on all my toms toms. :D It's nothing but a mental exercise. Catharsis.
I think you should publish whatever you want to write. You have full editorial control. I didn't see anything wrong with it at all. I think something is wrong with this scoring system the last 5 or 6 days. Things don't look right.
SEM Pro,
I love the way you slipped our own version of "Red House" in there! And the ZZ Top live tunes are great. I really enjoy the whole thing!
I published our version of "Green River" a few days ago on my newest Hub, "White Summer II"
WOW! That Cream tune is vintage! I didn't know it existed. Considering the equipment back then, it sounds better good!
And the clip of Stevie Ray—beautiful.
All of the rest of these tracks are great! The Hendrix, Buddy Guy, Nugent, Santana, Alvin Lee, Santana, Bowie, Pink Floyd, Doors . . . you made great choices!
It just hit me: That's a helluva set list for a 3 piece band!
:D
Whoops! One of my comments is partially duplicated above. Must have happened when I went to watch another video. Sorry!
Regarding the cassettes. I think you need them converted to CD first in order to use them in videos (analog to digital). Then I can help you with it.
I like this, especially since it wasn't about NAZIs or rascism. I read too much into Hub titles I guess. ;)
After reading this hub and all the commentary I am doubly sorry that I let other concerns keep me from attending. AHH well, no use crying over spilt milk under the bridge as they say! I can hardly wait for the next opportunity, and I trust that there will be many, to enjoy the music of this talented group of musicians. Lets plan on going together as a group. It would accomplish two things, meeting other hubbers and having a great time, both of which are highly desirable pursuits.
"Here I Go Again", (to coin a phrase) missing another reunion. Sounds like another time lost from memory! Lucky for me James will clue me in! (By the way I always enjoyed playing “White Snake” even though it wasn’t with you guys.)
David was one of the key members of White Summer. He was a tremendous bass player and a good singer, too. David was one of the original members of the band and later returned twice to grace us with his presence. David can be heard on YouTube in the three songs put on there from our first album.
David lives in Dyersburg, Tennessee. I went up there to visit him in February. He has expressed interest in the reunion gigs but has yet to make it to any.
I am available anytime, if you can pry me away from my Hub Pages! :D
Don't forget to invite Randy Behavior! :-)
The thing will be to check the schedule of Bad Mannerz and catch them at a nice venue. What is the window and I'll check his schedule?
Yes, I'll call Jimmy and check it out. This is an interesting idea. It would be great to meet a bunch of other Hubbers. That has a ring to it.
Randy Behavior is a Hubber, I thought you knew. Never mind if you don't.
How about advisor4qb, do you know her?
SEM Pro, this is very cool. Looks like loads of fun! Thanks for sharing. Like the sound. James, is the man...
This is the most wonderful tribute ever paid to White Summer over all these years. You really got it. You understood why all those people were there to hear a band that has not been extant for 18 years. I love you for writing this. Thank you.
Hey Syl!
K@ri and I were just talking about James and a hub I commented on earlier today....and she had to show me this! I bet it was an awesome time! I love the songs the set list contains in, and I especially love the track I've playing that is there's via youtube.
B E A U T I F U L.
Glad you could make it there and interview them!
Thanks Syl..you know how to make me blush. ;)
I'll be on the look out for the reunion in AZ. I may be, though K@ri definitely will be going to FL soon. But not under the best circumstances...
The next White Summer Reunion Concert will be Friday, November 25, 2011, at this same venue: Czars in St Joseph, Michigan. :D

After that build up, I'm so glad you put up their video, I would have been very disappointed if I didn't have a chance to hear them! They certainly are terrific, thanks.
